Ready Kids
Just like adults, kids need to be prepared for emergencies, the first step is helping kids feel safe and confident.
Like Mr. Rogers reminded us, a good place to begin talking about preparedness and safety is teaching kids to look for the helpers. Starting when kids are small, point out the the firefighters, medics, and law enforcement officers whenenver you see them helping others.
Explain how the different helpers do their jobs and who to go to when help is needed for emergencies.
Older kids can practice how to call 9-1-1, where to meet in an emergency and help in gathering supplies for emergency kits.
Working together on preparedness as a family will help kids feel safe and confident that they will know what to do if there is an emergency.
Children's Books for Preparedness
Reading books about preparedness is a great way to help kids prepare for and understand disasters. Choose books about disasters that impact Haywood County, like flooding, landslides, and wildfires. Read them together and take time to answer questions and encourage exploration of any concerns that may come up.
